Family Workshop: Awa Odori

Celebrate the rhythmic vitality and poetic spirit of Awa Odori in a unique program inspired by Isamu Noguchi’s Awa Odori (1982). In this interactive workshop with artist Hiromi Kiba and performing group Awa Odori New York Ren, participants will explore sculpture through poetry, dance, and music, and experience a dynamic Awa Odori dance performance with live instruments.

This program is recommended for families with children ages 8–14 years old and will take place in Area 1 and lower-level Education Studio.

About Hiromi Kiba 

Hiromi Kiba (they/them) is a Queens-based artist born in Ise, Japan. Their interdisciplinary practice incorporates poetry, sound, performance, video, and installation to explore themes of gender, wellness, and community. Recent projects include Still, Waters Run Deep (Rock Paper Scissors, 2025), OBE / Desatar / Jisei (自生) (Loisaida Center, 2025), Dokkoisho with CHIKA (Roulette Intermedium, 2024), and Queens Bohemian Rhapsody (QUEENSBOUND, 2024). They have participated in residencies at ChaShaMa (2022), NARS Foundation (2021), and mh PROJECT nyc (2020). Rooted in NYC’s diverse music scene, Kiba also performs as DJ kibachan, holding monthly vinyl residencies at Nightmoves and Tokyo Record Bar. Hiromi Kiba earned an MFA in New Forms from The City College of New York/CUNY (2001) and a BFA in Painting from the School of Visual Arts (1995).

About Awa Odori New York Ren

Founded in 2019, Awa Odori New York Ren is a performing group based in New York City, dedicated to sharing the joy and tradition of Awa Odori, one of Japan’s three major Bon (summer festival) dances from Tokushima. The group brings the rhythms, movements, and spirit of this cultural heritage to audiences across New York City through performances, festivals, cultural events, and educational Programs. It also offers interactive workshops that introduce participants of all ages to the history and movements of Awa Odori. The group’s mission is to preserve and celebrate Japanese cultural traditions while fostering cross-cultural understanding through dance and music.
