The Beinecke Rare Book Library was looked upon by Bunshaft as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make something great and lasting. That he asked me to do a sunken garden was a challenge I wanted by all means to be equal to. Two preliminary concepts were followed by a developed proposal. The details required unlimited adaptation. As realized, the entire garden will be seen as a single sculpture. The elements have reference to the sun, the earth, and chance.
