Memorial to Buddha

1957
Metal, Plaster, Wood
The epic time of the 1950s was when things seemed to happen everywhere at once. There was a competition in New Delhi for a monument commemorating the 2500th birthday of the Buddha. My proposal, which was sent from Japan, consisted of three petals of a giant lotus that converged to form an enclosure out of which rose a nine-bulbed root of the flower, in each of which was to be his image. The competition was canceled for some unknown reason.
