Awa Odori

Awa Odori

1982
Sculpture, Stone
The dance spectacle the Awa Odori takes place in Tokushima, the city to the south of Mure, where I have a studio. For three nights in the middle of August the dance flows down the streets, wave after wave of the most spectacular dancers of the Bon Festival. The rims of their straw hats tied beneath their chins make all women beautiful, dancing on the points of their sandals in formal formation, while the men display the most abandoned violence and skill.
Original Noguchi Collection
Quotations by Isamu Noguchi from The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum (New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1987), unless otherwise noted. The Noguchi Museum gives thanks to the many talented photographers who have documented Isamu Noguchi’s works, particularly Kevin Noble, who has photographed the Museum’s collection for decades, and Shigeo Anzai and Michio Noguchi, whose portraits of the original Museum installations continue to provide inspiration and insight.
