Educator Workshop | Noguchi’s Internment: One Artist’s Story
Monday, January 30, 2017 - 9:30am - 3:00pm

2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the wartime directive that authorized the incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans in the western United States. As a resident of New York, Isamu Noguchi wasn’t subject to internment, but he chose to enter the Poston War Relocation Center with hopes of contributing something positive to the community.

During this daylong professional development workshop, teachers will view the exhibition Self-Interned, 1942: Noguchi in Poston War Relocation Center and learn strategies for incorporating art into their classrooms. Using Noguchi’s letters and sculptures as primary resources, Senior Curator Dakin Hart and Museum Educators will discuss strategies for using Noguchi’s experience during this harrowing period in American history as a way to learn about Japanese American internment.

This free program is geared towards active 4th through 12th grade classroom teachers. Coffee and lunch will be served. Space is very limited, and registration will be on a first come, first serve basis.
