AAPI Community Day with Woomin Kim

In 2021, the Museum launched its first Open Call for Artist Banners with the aim of raising awareness and standing in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community against escalating and continued violence.

Artist Woomin Kim’s work Shijang Project (2021) was selected as a runner-up. Her banners rectify inaccurate Western depictions of Asian markets as dark and dangerous places, and present celebratory and colorful scenes that she experienced growing up in Korea. Woomin Kim joins fellow artists Chemin Hsiao and Mo Kong in a series of programming and free admission days to celebrate their projects and community engagement. 

Events Schedule

11 am—5 pm: Open Studio: Gallery Kit
This month we’re looking at Woomin Kim’s banners and creating a collage in the galleries motivated by the question: When do you feel people misrepresent you? How do you want to be represented? After your exploration, stop back at our table to share your thoughts and creation with us. For families and visitors of all ages.

2 pm: Public Tour
An introduction to the life and vision of Isamu Noguchi, exploring highlights of the Museum, the Artist Banners project, and special exhibitions.

3:30—5:30 pm: Appliqué Workshop with Woomin Kim
Join Woomin Kim in a two-hour long appliqué workshop. Learn about Kim’s banner project and artistic practice. Then learn introductory applique techniques and create a work of art in the studio. For adults ages 18 and older; previous experience is not necessary. Space is limited and advance registration is required.

Woomin Kim is a South Korean artist currently based in Queens. Through her textile and sculptural projects, she examines the active materiality of daily objects and urban landscapes. Kim has participated in exhibitions and residencies at the Queens Museum, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Boston Children’s Museum. Kim has received fellowships and awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Korean Cultural Center. Her works have been featured in The New York Times, Hyperallergic, and BOMB Magazine. Kim holds a B.F.A from Seoul National University and received an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. woominkim.com | @woominpkim
