Noguchi's interest in nature in relation to his sculpture is evident in the environments he created for his work. At his original Museum and Garden space on Vernon Boulevard, now under renovation, Noguchi made a major gesture of bringing sculptures out of the gallery and into the natural garden space he created with rocks, grasses, trees and shrubs.
In this new space in Sunnyside, Queens, the curatorial direction is to reverse this gesture by bringing the natural garden elements back into the gallery space to create a contrasting environment, related to the original garden and museum, in which to display over forty-five prime examples of the many phases of Noguchi's long and varied sculptural evolution.
Two measures of a work of art are how richly it rewards repeated viewings and what new aspects of itself it reveals when seen in different settings. This exhibit will afford viewers the opportunity to discover and re-discover the interplay of bold gestures and subtle nuances that make this master's work of timeless interest.
Presented in chronological and stylistic groupings, the exhibition includes some of the most important and well-known sculptures from the permanent collection of the Noguchi Museum. |
