The Noguchi Museum

Teen programs at The Noguchi Museum enable young people to make personal meaning of the art and life of Isamu Noguchi; explore their creative potential individually and collaboratively; and consider the role of the Museum, art and artists in the lives of teens today.

MAKING YOUR MARK (MYM)

MYM is a free program that introduces teens to the work and vision of world-renowned artist Isamu Noguchi. In MYM, participants learn to look at, discuss and interpret Noguchi’s art and the work of others from a personal standpoint; experiment with a variety of art materials and methods; and create their own artwork inspired by these experiences.  This summer, MYM will focus on the potential of artists to contribute to their surroundings, impact their environments, and invent innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Summer sessions combine gallery-based experiences with studio-based art making and trips to local galleries and artist’s studios. MYM participants also exhibit their work at the Museum at the end of the session.

Students interested in participating should:
Be enrolled in high school during the regular school year OR be between the ages of 14-19.
Be interested in looking at, talking about and creating art.
Be able to attend the program according to the session schedule.

Making Your Mark started on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 and finished on Thursday, August 13, 2009.  MYM met Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 11 am – 2 pm. For further information, please email education@noguchi.org or call 718.204.7088, extension 205.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (TAB)

Teens are invited to make the Museum “their place” through participation in the TAB. TAB members are made up of previous program participants, local students interested in the arts and teens committed to ensuring that the Museum is vital and accessible to their community.

TAB members collaborate with education department staff on program development and outreach. The TAB presents events such as INterpret, which turns the Museum’s education center into a meeting spot for local teens, and organizes the Making Your Mark program’s exhibitions – choosing the featured artwork, creating the accompanying outreach materials and promoting the event to the local community.

SCHEDULE
During the 2008-2009 school year, the TAB will meet two afternoons each month from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Additional meetings are scheduled by the TAB as necessary.

To participate in the TAB, you must:
-Be enrolled in high school during the regular school year OR be between the ages of 14-19.
-Be interested in and willing to work with others on the development of Noguchi Museum programs, events and materials.

To learn more about the TAB contact education@noguchi.org or call 718.204.7088, extension 205.

PAST SPECIAL EVENTS

The Tree of Heaven
Documenting a project of change and evolution

October 11 – December 14, 2008

This exhibition provided an overview of the Teen Advisory Board’s documentation of the Museum’s Tree of Heaven project. The Museum’s Ailanthus tree (also known as the Tree of Heaven), the only plant life original to the junkyard which Isamu Noguchi transformed into the garden space, was dying and presented a potential danger to visitors and to the garden’s sculptures. Photos taken by Teen Advisory Board members, audio material and a scrapbook served as guides to the members’ interpretation of the project and to the undertaking itself.

INsight
Saturday, May 17, 2008

The Museum’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) organized and moderated this panel discussion geared towards teens with a particular interest in careers in the arts. Panelists included Kerry Downey, Artist and Curator with Flux Factory; Ascha Drake, Artist and Educator with the Noguchi Museum; and Katie Mangano, Graphic Designer with MSLK.
