EXHIBITION MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF CALIFORNIA SCENARIO, ONE OF NOGUCHI’S MOST IMPORTANT PUBLIC GARDENS
The Noguchi Museum marks the thirtieth anniversary of California Scenario, an important garden designed by Isamu Noguchi under commission from developer and philanthropist Henry T. Segerstrom, with California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination. On view at the Museum through October 24, 2010, the exhibition explores the garden, which is located in Costa Mesa, California, through photographs, models, and video.
California Scenario: The Courage of Imagination is installed in two galleries. The first—which contains Noguchi’s original scale-model, archival photographs documenting the planning process and the newly finished plaza, and a video of the artist assembling his sculpture Spirit of the Lima Bean—shows the garden as it originally appeared. In the second gallery, a new scale-model (commissioned by Mrs. Elizabeth Segerstrom as a gift to the Museum in honor of her husband), recent photographs, and a video featuring an interview with Mr. Segerstrom, present California Scenario as it looks today, when it is a beloved part of the landscape and a popular destination for both residents of and visitors to Costa Mesa.
