Sculpture in the Landscape: Conversation with Yorkshire Sculpture Park Director Peter Murray and Noguchi Museum Curator Bonnie Rychlak

Peter Murray, founding director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, explores the relationship of sculpture and landscape in conversation with Noguchi Museum Curator Bonnie Rychlak. The discussion will focus on land art, site-specific works, and issues related to exhibiting sculpture in the open air. Particular reference will be made to Isamu Noguchi at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the first major European exhibition of Noguchi’s sculptures, which underscored the artist’s enduring interest in the interaction between art and the landscape.

Peter Murray founded Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 1977 while he was principal lecturer in art education at Bretton Hall College, in England. He has organized and curated exhibitions on Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, Marino Marini, Kan Yasuda, Ursula von Rydingsvard, David Nash, Magdelena Abakanowicz, Anthony Caro, Joel Shapiro, Barbara Hepworth, and Eduardo Chillida, among others.

A trustee of the Marino Marini Museum, in Florence, Italy, Mr. Murray is also a member of the Art Advisory Committee of the Springhornhof Foundation, in Germany, and a past member of the Board and Vice President of the International Sculpture Center, in Washington, DC. Among the many honors he has received are the National Arts Collection Fund Award, election as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lincolnshire and North Humberside, and an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for contribution to the arts.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP), located near Wakefield, England, is one of Europe’s leading open-air galleries. With more than forty sculptures sited in 500 acres of eighteenth-century parkland, as well as a vibrant program of temporary exhibitions, YSP is an international center for modern and contemporary art. In addition to its vast outdoor space, it has four indoor galleries.

Highlights of YSP’s permanent collection include works by Anthony Caro, Andy Goldsworthy, Antony Gormley, Barbara Hepworth, Sol LeWitt, Henry Moore, Eduardo Paolozzi, and James Turrell.
