Job Description

The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum seeks a Grants Writer. The position reports to the Deputy Director with whom s/he will develop, prepare, and submit the fundraising proposals, reports, and stewardship for foundations, corporations, and government agencies to maintain and increase support for exhibitions, conservation, archives, educational initiatives, public programs, general operations, and capital projects at the Museum. S/he will work across the institution and collaborate with staff in other departments, including: curatorial, education, and finance. The Noguchi Museum’s annual budget is nearly $5 million and approximately 30% is raised through the Development office.


About the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum

The Noguchi Museum – chartered as The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum – was founded and designed by the acclaimed Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) for the display of his life’s work. Opened in 1985 and located in the vibrant neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens, the Museum is housed in a converted industrial building and is itself considered to be one of Noguchi’s greatest works. Today, the mission of the Museum is to advance the understanding and appreciation of Noguchi’s art and legacy. It manages the world’s most extensive collection of Noguchi’s sculptures, works on paper, architectural models, and designs, in addition to his complete archives. Through its rich collection, exhibitions, and programming, the Museum facilitates scholarship and learning for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, prepare, and submit fundraising proposals, reports, and stewardship for foundations and government agencies.
  • Research foundations, corporations, and government agencies to identify opportunities that are aligned with and support the Museum’s mission and initiatives
  • Facilitate the development of grant proposals and project budgets in collaboration with the Deputy Director and senior staff members
  • Maintain grant reporting and ongoing donor stewardship, including preparation of reports, budgets, progress reports, regular correspondence, and final reports
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Director, initiate relationships with new prospective funders, write letters of inquiry, and solicitation letters
  • Maintain a central grants calendar and continuously update donor files
  • Monitor donor acknowledgment in credit lines
  • Gather support documentation for applications and for final reports
  • Maintain the day-to-day operations of foundation, government, and corporate supporters for projects in the Development office inclusive of moves management system, data management, all reporting functions, and support to the Director and Deputy Director.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
  • At least 3–5 years of museum or visual arts and/or design organization fundraising experience, particularly in grant writing and reporting and proposal development
  • Demonstrated success in writing, submitting, and securing grants
  • Must be a self-starter and possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to manage a high-volume office and multiple projects simultaneously in a small organization with limited resources.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, writing persuasive and comprehensive grant proposals.
  • Must be proactive, meet deadlines, and have excellent follow-through.
  • Proven ability to think strategically.
  • Works well as a team member, both departmentally and interdepartmentally.
  • Attention to detail and a careful, confident, precise working style are essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising databases; Raiser’s Edge is preferred.


The Grants Writer is a full-time position located in the administrative offices of The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. Evening events and meetings and weekend commitments are an occasional requirement of the position. Work is typically performed in an office environment; prolonged periods of sitting, use of computers and standard office equipment required to accomplish work objectives.
